Silvia Moreno-Garcia's latest novel is pictured as the retelling of H. G. Wells' all-time-classic "The Island of Dr. Moreau". Keeping this in mind, I was more than curious to find out how Garcia adapted this story against the background of the Mexican jungle around 1877. I approached the story with some kind of expectation and am more than pleased about what the story offered. Even though Garcia weaves in a lot of clues over the first half of the plot with regard to what kind of secrets adhere to Carlota Moreau, the revealing plot twist caught me nevertheless completely off guard and sent a jolt of adrenaline through my body. From then on, I simply flew through the rest of the story and felt deeply for Carlota, Montgomery and the so-called hybrids of Dr. Moreau's creation. I especially enjoyed the careful incorporation of scientific and medical aspects into the plot, which gives the story an all the more frightening yet realistic touch.
