Aro has had a difficult life. With an abusive step-father, two siblings who struggle for a bite of food, and her affiliations with illegal activities, she's learned that the only person she can rely on is herself. That is, until Hawke, the golden boy, comes to her rescue one miserable night, where everything goes wrong. And so, an uneasy alliance blossoms into more. I enjoyed this book because it shone light onto struggles that teenagers who have no one to protect them can get into. Aro's pain and stubbornness hit me hard, but also the kindness that Hawke showed her in times where she thought she had no one. The plot is steady, easy to follow and tense. I liked the tension, the supportive family members and friends, and the rivals who had an ulterior motive that went above "just being mean for the sake of it".
