A story about love, loss, and growth
This was sadder than expected. Victoria faces one hardship after the other, and as reader we see her growing from a teenager to a woman who is finally able to live life just as she wanted. Apart from the story, I really liked the setting and the way Shelley read evokes life in rural Colorado. -

Lesenswert! Deutscher Titel: So weit der Fluss uns trägt
Victoria Nash erfährt schon früh, was Verlust bedeutet. Ihr Alltag ist mühevoll und hart. Ihr Stellenwert in der Familie, Ende der 1940er Jahre, typisch für diese Zeit. Doch Torie besitzt eine ungeahnte innere Stärke, Mut und Entschlossenheit, die sie über sich hinauswachsen lässt, als sie sich in den "falschen" Mann verliebt und damit eine Katastrophe heraufbeschwört, die ihr ganzes Leben auf den Kopf stellen wird. Mehrfach habe ich gehört, dass dieses Buch teilweise sehr unrealistisch ist, dass manchmal die Logik fehlt oder Emotionen nicht richtig transportiert werden. Mag ja sein..., aber man sollte nicht vergessen, hierbei handelt es sich um einen Roman, nicht um einen Handelsblatt Tatsachenbericht. Dieses Buch ist für alle geeignet, die sich gerne einem "Märchen" für Erwachsene hingeben, die sich gerne in ein anderes Land, in ein anderes Leben träumen, mit der Protagonistin jeden Schicksalschlag durchstehen, Ungerechtigkeiten aushalten und hinterher zufrieden feststellen, dass Vergebung stets das Fundament des Glücklichseins ist. Wer gnädig bleibt und es liest als das was es ist, nämlich eine wunderschöne, gut erfundene Geschichte, der wird es am Ende zufrieden schließen. -

Initially, I thought this would be a warm and fuzzy tale about a forbidden first love, sprinkled with a bit of drama. And at first, it was! However, it transformed into an amazing narrative about a woman's resilience. It's about losing everything she knows and cherishes, searching for her place in the world, and discovering her unique way of living. I truly enjoyed this read, but I’m really curious about what happens after that sudden ending!
