Brooke returns to her hometown after many years only to find herself working in a prison. That is where her ex-boyfriend and the father of her son is incarcerated, having been convicted of multiple murders. However, as time goes on, doubts begin to arise as to whether the truth is really as clear-cut as everyone belives. I really enjoyed the book. Although the beginning drags a little, in hindsight, you realize that the information provided is crucial for the rest of the story. After that, the plot becomes increasingly gripping and I constantly wanted to know what would happen next. I particulary liked the writing style. The book is a very quick and smooth read, wich is why I finished it in just two days. The numerous plottwists kept the suspense high throughout. I didn´t see the ending coming at all, wich made the book even better for me . Overall, it is a highly suspenseful thriller that I would definitely recommend.

Als Brookes ältester Kumpel Tim wieder in ihr Leben tritt und eine Reihe seltsamer Dinge passieren, wird sie unsicher. Was geschah damals in der Nacht, in der auch sie angegriffen wurde, wirklich? Wer lügt und wem kann sie trauen? Freida McFadden ist mit „The Inmate“ (Häftling) wieder ein spannender Pageturner in gewohntem Schreibstil gelungen, der einen nur so durch die Seiten fliegen lässt. Die Handlung erscheint sehr durchschaubar, aber Richtung Ende kommt dann erst das wahre Motiv zum Vorschein, und der Epilog hat mich dann komplett gekillt und sprachlos zurückgelassen. Vergesst „Die Kollegin“ und „Die Ehefrau“ und lest stattdessen lieber „Häftling“. Trust me.

True to Freida McFadden's style, I was constantly taken by surprise; just when I thought I had unravelled the plot, she skillfully twisted the narrative in ways I never could have guessed. Her writing is not only easy to follow but also incredibly gripping and addictive. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and would highly recommend it to anyone who appreciates a fast-paced yet shocking read.

I liked the idea for this story, but couldnt enjoy it as much because of the main character and the naiveness that just annoys you after a while. The epilogue is what got me, a twist I did not see coming at all!

I absolutely adored this book! Definetely one of my highlights this year. Brooke Sullivan is a new nurse practitioner at a maximum-security prison, there she is taught three crucial rules: 1. Treat all prisoners with respect. 2. Never reveal any personal information. 3. Never EVER become too friendly with the inmates. But then suddenly someone she ones knew, is in need of medical attention. And now she seems unsure about the decision she made back then. What if he didn't murder them? May she be the reason that the wrong person was imprisoned? Is the real murderer still out there?
