She Is a Haunting

I really loved this book, it was a super fun read and I can’t wait to get my hands on the next Trang Thanh Tran novel! “She is a haunting” is gothic horror featuring a queer main character, many flowers, insects, and family drama. The topic of colonialism in Vietnam was one of the things I found the most interesting about the book, as it is a rather marginalised horrific part of history and is not talked about in German schools really. The surreal mini chapters, detailing the thoughts of the house, were refreshing and creative. I do agree that the novel has some YA features but I personally didn’t feel like it was too much to be readable by an adult too. The main character tending to push people away who are good to her might be viewed as “annoying” during the course of the story, as the pattern repeats several times, however I found that it was realistic based on Jade’s past experiences and the fear of being hated for who she really is by the people she loves. All in all a book I recommend to read if you’re interested in progressive horror!

She Is a Haunting is a creepy novel that I truly loved, especially for its setting. The incorporation of Vietnam’s present and past was wonderful. The exploration of the history of colonialism in Vietnam adds depth and meaning to the haunting itself. The horror does not shy away from darkness or even gore. Spoiler warning: beware of bugs! The novel works well for readers who enjoy haunted houses, ghosts, and stories about immigrant families, colonialism, and identity. The book’s atmosphere makes it a memorable read for those seeking something darker and different.

Creepy, chilling and haunting in a beautiful but twisted way. Couldn't stop reading. Wanted to know more. At all cost. Even if it got twisted and strange. When u didnt know if it was real or just in her head. if the Ghost is telling the true. I was questioning everything Maybe this book is haunting me...

Dieses Buch ist ein YA (Young Adult) Buch. Das ist keine Kritik, sondern einfach ein Fakt. Vom Cover oder der Beschreibung an sich ist das nicht zu erkennen und in dem Thalia, aus dem ich es habe, stand es zwischen Nicht-YA-Büchern. Der Anfang der Geschichte ist spannend - Jade besucht ihren Vater, den sie seid Jahren nicht gesehen hat, in dem Land aus dem ihre Eltern kommen, in dem sie sich aber wie ein Tourist fühlt. Hier erkennt sie allmählich, warum er so wenig Zeit für seine Kinder aufbringen konnte: eine alte, französische Villa aus Kolonialzeiten, die er fleißig (man könnte sagen obsessiv) repariert. In diesem Haus, dass lebendiger ist als es zunächst den Anschein erweckt, muss sie es nun irgendwie fünf Wochen aushalten. Sehr schnell ließ sich dann aber leider erkennen, dass die Geschichte nachdem die Prämisse dargestellt wurde, lange einfach nur auf der Stelle tritt. Was in der Beschreibung steht passiert … und dann erstmal viel zu lange gar nichts. Der versprochene Horror kommt ebenfalls kaum zur Geltung. Der Teil der Beschreibung, der namensgebend für das Buch ist, dauert nicht mal 90 Seiten und wird selbst da nur halbherzig ausgeführt. Man sollte nicht erwarten, dass Jade hier irgendwelche ausgefeilten Pläne durchführt, um ihre Familie aus dem Haus zu vertreiben. Da das für mich kaufentscheidend war, hätte mich die Story bis zu dem Punkt so packen müssen, dass ich trotzdem weiterlesen will. Da kommt der YA-typische Schreibstil ins Spiel. Die Geschichte wird aus Jades Perspektive (Ich-Perspektive) erzählt und Jade ist eine Bilderbuch „Ich-hasse-alles-hier“-Teenagerin. Schon nach kurzer Zeit ging mir ihre launische Art total auf den Senkel. Sie ist zu fast jedem anderen Charakter unglaublich abweisend oder einfach nur unfreundlich und trotzdem baut sie eine Beziehung zu Florence auf, die 0,0 Gründe hat, sie zu mögen. Die Geschichte von einem so anstrengenden Hauptcharakter erzählt zu bekommen, hat mich letztendlich dazu gebracht, das Buch abzubrechen. Zwei Sterne, weil ich mir vorstellen kann, dass jemand, der YA-Horror-Bücher gerne liest, es durchaus durchschnittlich gut finden kann. Es gibt Passagen an denen der geringfügige Horror gut zur Geltung kommt und die Geschichte des Hauses ist wenigstens interessant. Für mich war es leider ein Fehlgriff.
