Homegrown Magic

If your’re a fan of “Critical Role” kind of humor or DnD campaign coded fantasy worlds in general, I’d highly recommend this book. It was so easy to feel for Yael and Margot right from the beginning of the novel. Once I picked it up, I just couldn’t put it down again and wanted to read one chapter after another. The magic system is very interesting with some people having magical abilities naturally and others having to fight a bit harder for it. All the flowers, plants and farmhouse/countryside atmosphere delivered impeccable spring vibes, and the places described felt so imaginative and real I just wanted to explore every corner of the world Jamie Pacton and Rebecca Podos created. Also, I can’t resist a book with good family/royal court drama and an heir rejecting their role... so this storyline was catchy from the start! While I’m usually not the biggest fan of friends-to-lovers dynamics, Yael and Margot’s romance also won me over from the start. Always love to see a nonbinary protagonist and a queer normative world. I’d recommend it to everyone who liked “Legends & Lattes” but wished for a bit more plot & romance. I personally can’t wait to read the next novel set in this universe! (4.5 stars)
