Dutch journalist David Van Reybrouck has set himself the task to recount the Revolusi, Indonesia's revolutionary movement to end Dutch colonialism. From the beginnings to the colony to the establishment of the colonial segregation system, Reybrouck puts great value in oral accounts of the colonies. And as soon as we get to the twentieth century with the Japanese takeover, the American reconquest, Dutch attempts to regain their control and American meddling; the accounts are from actual interviews conducted by the author with survivors. Not only taking in the Indonesian perspective but also the Dutch debates around occupation and the world movement against colonialism, Reybrouck manages to paint a vibrant history.
