Set in the pandemic, travel writer Chiamaka begins a reflection on her past relationships and the lives she'd imagined them leading to, from a Black American art historian to a dutch business man. Meanwhile, her friends go through similar reflections: Zikora thinks through being left by her partner while pregnant and turning to her mother for favors, her friend Omelogor leaves her job as a dubious financier to study pornography and its impact on men's sex education, and her housekeeper Kadiatou tries to wrangle a court case against a man who raped her while facing the cultural and language barrier to the US. Revolving around themes like cultural alienation when moving from Africa to the US, relationships, and what women want to achieve in their life, Dream Count is essentially a collection of four novellas which softly interweave.
