The Paris Bookseller

'The Paris Bookseller' is based on the life of Sylvia Beach, an American expatriate who openend an English Bookshop in Paris in 1919 from where she would publish James Joyce's 'Ulysses' in 1922. Her bookstore and lending library 'Shakespeare and Company' was a gathering place for many (aspiring) writers of the 'Lost Generation' such as Ernest Hemingway or Ezra Pound. This book is work of fiction and can definetly b enjoyed without any prior knowledge about the subject and does take some creative liberties, but I loved it. A Lesbian bookseller opening an English Bookshop in Paris, publishing one of the most controverial banned books and berfiending mny well-known authors: This is exactly my jam and actually my dream in life. Kerri Maher paints Sylvia Beachs story so beautifully without taking away how much she sacrificed for her bookshop and the publification of 'Ulysses'. I think its safe to say this book has thrown me headfirst into a new hyper-fixation and Sylvia Beach will forever remain an Icon and very close to my heart! If you loved this book: I highly recommend reading her Memoir as well to get further insight into her life in Paris!
