    Charming, creepy & funny

In typical Kingfisher fashion this is an absolutely charming and entertaining read with a sprinkle of unsettling and creepy desert monsters and gods and a wonderful found family. I adored this story.

weird but in the best and most fun way!

For me personally, the best part were the characters. They were so fun to be around, get to know and witness interacting with each other and also evolving as people. They felt like real people in a way and each had their distinct ways of speaking and acting. I can't help but think that Grandma Billy is probably a big fan of Sabrina Carpenter! Kingfisher's writing is amazing! Unique and unusual words (that often felt like onomatopoeia) combined with elements of modern language that did not feel out of place at all (rather sometimes added to the humor of the novel) created a super fun reading experience that at the same time taught me soooo many new cool words (of which I probably sadly won't be able to remember all). The humor that the novel has is a huge highlight for me. It was a great mix of banter, inside jokes between the characters that felt true to their relationships and ways of communicating, sneakily dirty comments and sometimes just the absolute absurdety of the situation that the protagonist Selena finds herself in. It's 4 and not 5 stars for me only because of the last bit before the ending, which felt a little off to me or just drifted into a direction, that wasn't my thing, personally.

    Snake Eater

Oh holy moly!! On my great quest to read every book T. Kingfisher ever written, I - of course - could not have skipped her newest one. Oh what a treat. I wouldn't call this horror per se - it's more like a soft horror-ish cozy found family story. It's cute and full of friends and it kind of made me want to move to the desert. Me. A person who neither likes sun nor temperatures over 22 degrees. That just shows you how much I liked it. Also I loved the character developement our main character Selena has over the span of this book, even though character design obviously wasn't the main focus. Definitely one of my favorite Kingfisher books so far <3

    Buch (Gebundene Ausgabe)

    Lost in the Desert

Kingfisher is my ride and die, forever and always. Reason why only giving three stars feels like a crime, but it's good hearted three stars. The unexpected weirdness and endearing characters is a Kingfisher trademark and always a selling point, this time however they felt extremely recycled and reminded me too much of Twisted Ones and House With Good Bones (if you haven't read those yet: this is your reminder to do so!), which were far superior in regards to suspense, horror and enjoyable weirdness. This one is more on the slow and cosy side and unfortunately confusing one, too. I liked the found family trope, the setting and mystery of the town, and as much as I adore books with unique ideas (and Kingfisher as a writer for that matter) this one bored me for the most part.
