Dear Debbie The Instant Sunday Times Bestselling Psychological Thriller from the Author of The Housemaid Books

I've gotta be honest, this is the first book by Freida McFadden that actually caught my attention, but if her other thrillers are as good as this one, then I didn't do them justice. This was phenomenal! The plot plays out so nicely, there is not a single thing that I could criticize. I definitely recommend!

I used to love reading the advice columns in magazines as a teen, so I was immediately sucked in to the premise of Dear Debbie - and once again McFadden didn’t disappoint. The way this author writes in the most intentional way so that every sentence ties together to form an extremely well thought out plot is just so satisfying to read. We have a story about a woman who has been deeply wronged and is simply fed up with being a doormat, so she decides that it is time to take matters into her own hands. Dear Debbie is all about getting revenge and not letting anyone mess with you or your family.

Freida McFadden macht mich fertig mit ihren Plot Twists. Ich hab‘s mal wieder nicht kommen sehen. Alles scheint glasklar, und am Ende ist wieder fast nichts wie es scheint. ‚Dear Debbie‘ ist neben ‚The Boyfriend‘ nun wohl einer meiner neuen Favoriten aus ihrer Feder und es tut mir sehr leid für alle Fans, die keine englischen Bücher lesen und nun auf die Übersetzung warten müssen.

This was the first book by Freida McFadden that I have read and she did not disappoint. "Dear Debbie" caught my attention because it deals with the topic of feminism and female rage. The life of the main character Debbie spirals out of control. She used to give advice in her column where hopeless wives came for sympathy and neighbourly advice. Unfortunately she got fired after she advised one of her readers to divorce her husband because he was financially abusing her, sadly this did not sit right with her conservative boss. Furthermore her husband seems to be keeping secrets from her and her teenage daughter starts acting strange. Finally Debbie is done being the bigger person and she starts taking her own advice. I really loved Freida’s writing style, the story hooked me from the start and the different POVs added to the story. I don’t want to give away too much but especially the ending reveals how incredibly smart Debbie acted all along and how strongly she internalized female rage. I would absolutely recommend this book, especially to readers who enjoy smart female main characters and surprising twists.

Ich dachte wirklich, ich weiß mittlerweile, worauf ich mich bei Freida McFadden einlasse… aber Dear Debbie hat mich trotzdem wieder komplett reingezogen. Dieses Buch hat diese typische Freida-Energie: man liest ein Kapitel und denkt sich „okay, jetzt weis ich wer es ist“ und plötzlich ist es viel später, weil man einfach wissen MUSS, was passiert, weil man natürlich falsch lag. Die Spannung baut sich richtig gut auf und dieses ständige Gefühl von „irgendwas stimmt hier nicht…“ begleitet einen die ganze Zeit. Man rätselt, hinterfragt alles und versucht, schneller zu sein als die Geschichte (Spoiler: klappt natürlich nicht).
