The Lighthouse Witches

This novel would actually be the perfect read for the Halloween season. With its unsettling atmosphere on a remote island in Scotland and the historical background of the Scottish witch trials, C. J. Cooke provides an ideal starting point for her dark and sinister family drama. Together with her three daughters Sapphire, Luna and Clover, Liv decides to accept a promising job offer to restore the interior walls of an old lighthouse. As folklore goes, the town people seem to believe the lighthouse to be haunted by the ghosts of witches, who were held prisoner in its underground cave during the witchcraft trials in the 17th century. When Sapphire and Clover disappear without a trace, Liv is almost pushed over the edge with regard to her set of beliefs in supernatural phenomena as she is desperately trying to find out what has really happened to her daughters. Alternating between three different points of view, Cooke's story reads like a multi-layered riddle as each and every character is obsessed with his own version of the truth. Combined with its fast pace, this story resembles a tunnel of horror that concludes in an ending of which I am still not sure what to think about. Keep an open mind and you might really love it.

At times a bit confusing but all in all a great mysterious book about family, sisterhood, superstition and magic.
