On the Calculation of Volume I Shortlisted for the International Booker Prize 2025

When Tara Selter wakes up at her hotel on a November morning, she suspects nothing unusual. Increasingly, events around her seem a little too familiar until she realizes she is trapped in a time loop. Instead of a comedy about a cranky Bill Murray turning to good over a time loop, Balle develops her story procedurally. Her character's thoughts change as she has to grapple with the time loop being possibly inescapable and that she might never make her husband permanently understand her own situation. As such, we are almost completely alone with Tara's msuings about her dilemma and the occasional spontaneous conversation. This makes for a meandring, existential, and philosophical nove, big recommendation to anyone looking for a mental reset.
