Fantastic Fantasy/ Good World Building / Diverse Cast / Not too much romance

Extensive world building, majority of characters were lovable with interesting story arcs, sentient dragons. What I really enjoyed was how historical figures within that universe were turned into legends, and have practically have led various cultures to develop their own belief systems. Those are being tackled and questioned, though in the end, the truth will be unveiled. Diverse set of characters, queer romance. The plot and characters take front of the stage, romance is there too and develops organically, but doesn’t distract from the main story.

    Buch (Taschenbuch)

fantasy for feminists, queers, and dragon enthusiasts

"The Priory of the Orange Tree" embraces inclusivity with its queer and ethnic representations. As stated by the author, the novel draws inspiration from a number of cultures, mythologies, and religions which creates a very contemporary approach to the fantasy genre. The narrative unfolds through the compelling journeys of three main female characters, two of whom are warriors and the third is a queen. The story's events are expertly driven by these female characters, complemented by two well-rounded male characters that add depth and support, without overshadowing the central heroines. So no chosen-one female hero vs. all men are a**holes tropes. The story lives through the portrayal of its complex and authentic characters. Notably, the book avoids displays of racism and sexism, instead opting for a nuanced and insightful approach that adds layers of depth to the narrative. For example, the pressure of social expectations faced by a female head-of-state. (This sexism aspect is something that bothered me, for example, in The Witcher Series, where female characters are frequently threatened by and face instances of sexism and rape). One of the book's greatest features is its incredible worldbuilding, which immerses readers into a complex world with its own cultures and beliefs. Throughout the narrative, readers are engaged in a slow and captivating unraveling of the world's history and mysteries. Some readers have noted a rushed final battle, which I agree with, the ending does feel a bit rushed. However, Samantha Shannon has acknowledged this critique and stated that she shortened the ending based on the advice of her editors. To summarize, "The Priory of the Orange Tree" showcases skillful storytelling by integrating inclusivity, rich worldbuilding, and complex characters which captivated me from start to finish.

    an absolutely epic tale

This is the best book I've read in a long time! The story and worldbuilding are amazing and I totally love Samantha Shannon's writing style. High fantasy enthusiasts will love this book, but people who like simpler stories might not find there happiness here. I think I can say without having a bad conscience that everything about this book is absolutely amazing! The modern "Lord of the Rings" I never knew I needed.

    Buch (Taschenbuch)

“We may be small, and we may be young, but we will shake the world for our beliefs.”

A mage, forced to hide her powers. An alchemist, that was banished from his home country long ago. A dragon rider with a secret, that could tear her whole life apart. A noble man, sent away to find the world in more ash and despair, than he could have ever thought. A complex story told in 4 different point of views. If you need to escape from reality for a while, then this is the book!

    Buch (Gebundene Ausgabe)

Feminist and Queer Fantasy with Dragons <3

I had this for years and since I reheated my love for fantasy books, this was a great start to dive again into high fantasy stories! I adore Samantha Shannon’s world building and I am beyond excited to read their other series! I love the romance in this book, as it is very subtle and leaves a lot of room for the element of creating a found family!!

    Buch (Taschenbuch)

    Feminist Epic Fantasy

This book checks all the boxes: a fascinating story, captivating characters, a romace that has you melting and most important: dragons! We follow a diverse cast of characters in different parts of this unique wold, who all meet when the story brings them together at the end. The world feels rich and deep with lore and mythology which in turn makes the characters feel like real people, each with their own history, feelings and motives. This book is feminist without trying to be, which i appreciate very much. The lead female characters are strong without coming accross as "girlboss" type characters. There is power in femininity and emotionality and this book expresses this without being too on the nose about it. Although there is very beautiful romance aspect to this story, it doesn't overtake the plot, though it of course influences it to a degree. The book is quite a tome with almost 900 pages, which can be intimidating, but I promise its worth it at the end! All in all a beautifully written High-Fantasy book that will keep you hooked and wanting for even more pages!

    Buch (Taschenbuch)

Dragons, Sapphics and High Fantasy...what else do you need?

A divided world and the greatest foe of humanity is on the verge of awakening. In the west a queen without an heir and her lady of the bedchamber who seems to be so much more. In the east a girl whose biggest dream is to become a dragon rider and a doctor who was exiled. Many characters with different views of the world but in the end they all must stick together! The Priory of the Orange Tree lays out a complex story in a complex world connecting all the puzzle pieces of the characters until eventually it all comes together. Every little detail is important when you least expect it. One of my absolute favorite Fantasy Books which has just the right touch of a sapphic romance and the fact that it's all wrapped up in a world with dragons makes it even better!

Dragons, magic and a sapphic love story. What more could you ask for?

I admit the sheer size of this book intimidated me at first and kept this on my TBR for some time but I have not regretted picking this up for a single second. A High Fantasy that in the beginning is more like two completely different stories as the world is built around the court of the Queendom and the simple life of a priestress of the Orange Tree, only for both of the stories to become one as the worlds of our protagonists collide and weave together is not what I expected, it's even better. An epic tale with court intrigues, a unique magic system and dragons I'll keep recommending for the foreseeable future. I'll definitly be picking up the prequel (after I get over its page count ).

    Buch (Gebundene Ausgabe)

    830 pages full of greatness

When ''The Priory Of The Orange Tree'' first came out, I distinctly remember people being scared of the size of this epic fantasy tome, understandably so. But here, volume equals greatness and so what you're getting is over 800 pages filled with excellently curated plot lines, a cast of powerful female characters, marvelous world-building, a well-executed slow-burn romance between two women, and the most important thing of all: Sentient dragons. I truly salute Samantha Shannon for her work with ''The Priory Of The Orange Tree''. It feels like a breath of fresh air and positively stands out in the mostly male-dominated high fantasy space. And if we're being honest, the combination of sapphics, dragons, and magic could totally qualify as the trifecta of an excellent fantasy book.
