Hauntingly atmospheric and beautifully

As someone who is obsessed with V.E. Schwabs latest releases I was intrigued to read one of her “older” books. Gallant tells the story of Olivia who grew up in a school for ophan girls. She knows nothing about her family, the only reminder she has, is her mothers journal which also gives her no clues regarding her heritage since the journal entries are pretty manic and irrational. All of the sudden Olivia recieves a letter from her uncle who has been searching for her, he invited her to his manor Gallant, yet when Olivia arrives, no one is expecting her. But Olivia is not about to leave the first place that ever felt like home. Her dedication to stay in Gallant only grows stronger after she spots half-formed ghouls haunting the hallways, which seem to be her deceased relatives. I really enjoyed reading this book. It targets a younger audience but scince Schwab’s world-building is as immersive as ever, and the characters are rich with emotional depth, i was hooked since the very first page. V. E. Schwab created a hauntingly atmospheric and beautifully crafted story which was only enhanced by her wonderful literary writing style.

V.E. Schwab is one of my favourite authors, so I might be a bit partial with my opinion of her books. Gallant was, like her other books, dark and gritty. The fact that the main character cannot talk made for a very special relationship between the reader and Olivia that I have never experienced in another book before. If you don’t like it if a problem doesn’t get resolved properly, then this is not a book for you. But if you like a dark and twisted tale, where you feel like you know what’s going to happen, though it happens in an unexpected way, then you should definitely read this book.
