What Moves the Dead

I have not read Poe's short story yet, but I loved Kingfisher's reinterpration. This was definitley different to other horror stories I previously read but not in a bad way. While it was quite atmospheric and gross at times, the story in general was more lighthearted and quite humorous due to the narration. I think this would be great for everyone who is unsure if body horror really is something they would enjoy or dip their toes into a new genre as well as established horror readers.

A beautifully haunting re-imagining "The Fall of the House of Usher's" by Edgar Allen Poe. I loved the eerie gothic atmosphere! I was also a big fan of the main character Alex and their witty remarks, considering the dire situations they frequently found themselves in. Since this book is quite short, there is no room for fluff but I enjoyed this type of tight storytelling alot. This is a great spooky read for rainy autumn days!

So this is my second Kingfisher read this month and let me tell you it won't be the last. First of all, I fell for the amazing cover. We all know it's the inside that counts blabla but it's genuinely one of the best horror covers for me. I'm not always the biggest fan of retellings but rest assured if it's an Edgar Allan Poe Classic reinterpretation by T. Kingfisher it's got to be good. Needless to say it ticks off all the boxes if you love horror reads as much as I do. The creepiness of it all was just FUNGamentally brilliant. That's funny because there is this fungal infestation around the land. Absolutely disgusting, I know. But what I loved most about it is the fact, that it's downright hilarious.

T. Kingfisher ist ein Quell an Kreativität. Dies stellt sie erneut in dieser Neuerzählung des "Fall des Hauses Usher" unter Beweis. Gerade die unterschwellige Angst und Bedrohung wird meisterhaft dargestellt. Die Charaktere sind sich einer Gefahr bewusst, sie sehen sogar einige der Symptome und eventuellen Verursacher, doch sie sind in ihrer Handlungsunfähigkeit gefangen, da sie die Geschichte nicht wie wir Lesenden von außen erleben. Was Poe in seinem Original nur anreißt ist der Grund für den Verfall und die Krankheit der Ushers. Diesem Umstand widmet sich Kingfisher genaustens und liefert mit den Fungi als Antagonisten nebenbei noch einen fantastischen Kommentar auf die Rückeroberung der Natur in Räumen die der Mensch in Beschlag nimmt und verwahlosen lässt. Die mit Abstand gelungenste Verbesserung der Geschichte ist die überarbeitete Figur des Alex Easton. Im Original der Erzähler, kommt Easton dort eher scheu und verstaubt rüber. Seine Anwesenheit ist kaum von Bedeutung für die Geschichte und am Ende ist es mehr Zufall als Intention dass er überlebt. Kingfisher räumt auf und verwandelt ihn in eine nonbinäre Person, komplett mit spannender Backstory und fantastischen Pronomen. Alex Easton, vom biologischen Geschlecht eine Frau, überwindet Stigmata und Vorurteile. Ist endlich das was man sich von einer guten literarischen Figur wünscht: individuell, aufmerksam, humorvoll, pragmatisch und entfesselt von veralteten Ansichten und Grenzen. Kan (das korrekte Pronomen innerhalt der Geschichte für Alex) trägt zur Handlung bei, ermittelt, wird vom Fieber der Geschichte infiziert und ist dabei ein Kompass der Menschlichkeit, dessen Ideen und Handeln letztendlich ausschlaggebend für das große Finale der Geschichte sind. Mir hat der erste Teil der Sworn Soldier Reihe sehr gut gefallen. Einen Stern abzug gibts nur dafür, dass mir das Buch zu kurz war. Ich brauche diese Geschichte unbedingt in der Extended Version von Kingfisher! 400, 500, 600 Seiten bitte! Ganze ganz große Leseempfehlung!

T. Kingfisher manages to pack so much into this short book. The slowly building suspense and ever-present sense of wrongness are still not enough to prepare you for the grand finale! The main character is incredibly compelling, as are the supporting cast, and I had to get my hands on the second book immediately.
