Rezension

In this gothic adventure, debut novelist McGill builds on Shelley's iconic story by adding sharp-minded female protagonist Mary, who sets out to discover the truth about her great-uncle Victor Frankenstein's disappearance in the Arctic. STYLIST, 'The best new feminist retellings of classic stories to read in 2023'

Great Frankenstein-Retelling with queer elements!

Bewertung am 14.04.2025

Bewertungsnummer: 2466117

Bewertet: Buch (Taschenbuch)

Mary is a geologist and paleontologist by passion but struggles to find footing in the academic societies due to her station as a woman. On the other hand, her husband Henry remains a known fellow even after several faux pas. But after recovering her great-uncle's writings about a grand exepriment, in which he creates live through electricity and chemistry, Mary feels like she holds the key to her academic coming-out. This novel is a great "what-if": what if Frankenstein was a woman and what if the creature brought back to life was met by a maternal instead of a paternal creator. This novel challenges victorian gender norms through a strong female character while delivering a gothic atmosphere and a subtle yet heartfelt lesbian romance.

Spine chilling

Bewertet: Buch (Gebundene Ausgabe)

Do you love Frankenstein? And love seeing women stand up for themselves? Then get your hands on this one! The spooky atmosphere as described in Frankenstein was perfectly implemented here.

A dark, gothic-esque retelling

Bewertet: Buch (Gebundene Ausgabe)

Mary Shelley's ''Frankenstein'' is one of my favorite classics, especially for this time of year. Set in the 1850s, ''Our Hideous Progeny'' is a creative spin-off, tinged with a hint of gothic vibes and feminism. The writing style is richly detailed, starting off each chapter with a quote from the classic, which is something I really appreciate. Our main character Mary (quelle surprise) is a would-be palaeontologist and we follow her fight for acclaim and acceptance in the scientific world. I wished for a little more pacing, as it's quite the slowburn and therefore the creature is only a secondary character in this story. This amazing debut from the author is filled with the yearning for secret histories, ambition and passion. Also let me tell you, the only thing that's being hideous in this story, is her husband.
