I had very high hopes for this book and in the end they were surpassed. By a lot. The story about Emily, Wendell and the people (and fairies) of Ljosland creeped into my heart and now I will never let it go. This book is mystical, chilling, whimsical and so utterly charming. With its sometimes seemingly coldhearted and calculating characters and the mischievous and cruel nature of the fairies this reminded me a lot of 'the Cruel Prince' by Holly Black. What I especially loved was the diary-style of writing and thefables woven into this story. I cannot wait to read the second and third installment in this series.

Cozy, weird and comforting!

Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Fairies follows a professor of dryadology on her excursion to a remote scandinavian island. There, she does not only find answers for her research but also uncovers parts of old local lore that might or might not bring her very close to danger. The small town she is staying in provides a dark but comfortable atmosphere and supports the plot with a fair amount of backstory. This story has romance, mystery, lore and very much likeable characters with a great dynamic. I also feel like whatever cover you have sets the mood for the book itself. For me, it was the darker one, causing me to feel a dark-cottage core vibe while reading it. A good thing to know is that this book is built up like a scientific journal that includes footnotes! I'd recommend this book if you are a fan of folklore, fae, cottagecore and stories that are set in small towns. Bonus if you enjoy books that set in winter!
