Hanada, after seperating from her husband and feeling as if she is at rock bottom, decides to join an App which allows her to set up 30 minute meetings with strangers. She makes it her goal to recommend these strangers the perfect book, drawing at her experience of working at a bookstore. Along the way, and with the help of the strangers she meets, Hanada slowly realizes the changes she needs to make in her life in order to become happy. It is an uplifting story about finding yourself and your place in the world, even when everything seems to be falling apart.

In “The Bookshop Woman” Nanako Hanada writes about her own life and how her relationship to books changed over time. Her memoire reads like fiction and I actually only realized in the very end, that “The Bookshop Woman” is not fiction but Nanako Hanada`s real life experiences. In the beginning of the book Nanako is at a very bad place in her life, she just broke up with her husband, is homeless for a short amont of time and she isn`t happy with her job at a bookstore anymore. In need of change Nanako signes up to an unusual dating app. There she meets up with strangers for 30 minutes at a time and tries to recommend the perfect book for them. Through the Dating App Nankao meets people she connects with on a deeper level and builds friendships for life. It is really beautiful and inspiring to read how Nanakos view on life changes and how she falls in love with living again. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to read coming of age novels, memoires which fell like fiction and to anyone who is interested in japanese culture.
