The Spear Cuts Through Water

I would recommend this book to everyone that loves epic sagas and mythological tales of a forgotten Old World. This is beautiful story told in an unconventional and unique way. The story takes place on a theatre stage, where it tells the tale of a spear- its history, its journey through the Old World and how it ended up in your hands, the readers hands. The story dives between the tales of the old world and the present and the memories of different people until all the threads converge and build a beautiful tapestry of a saga. This book is full of twists and turns, everything is unpredictable except for how it is supposed to end. Which makes the journey even more important.

Ein magisches Buch voller Atmosphäre, einem tollen Schreibstil und einer traumhaft schön aufgebauten Welt. Wir folgen hier einem Theaterstück, welches der Protagonist in einer Art Zwischenwelt sieht. Dieses Theaterstück wiederum handelt von zwei jungen Männern, die gemeinsam versuchen einer geflohenen Göttin dabei zu helfen, die Terrorherrschaft ihrer Kinder zu beenden. Das Buch hat mir unfassbar gut gefallen und vor allem der Schreibstil konnte mich sehr überzeugen. Die Sichtweisen wechseln manchmal rasant zwischen Theaterstück, der Sichtweise des Protagonisten im Theater und irgendwelchen Charakteren aus der Welt hin und her. Anfangs war es etwas seltsam, sich darauf einzulassen wie plötzlich die point of view ändert, aber daran gewöhnt man sich schneller als gedacht. Die Handlung war großartig, einzigartig und hat mich deswegen sehr in seinen Bann gezogen. Von mir eine absolute Leseempfehlung!

Such an amazing book, I’m not sure I’ve read anything like it before. The story itself is really exciting. We follow two men, each marked by their own past, as they go on a five-day pilgrimage to escort a dying goddess across the land. Along the way there are numerous gut-wrenching but also tender moments as we glance into the deepest and most gruesome parts of humanity. It really was a surprisingly touching and intimate rollercoaster of emotions. What fascinated me the most though is the unique writing style. It’s hard to explain, you'll have to read it to understand what I mean. But one example would be the framework plot in which the character, from whose perspective it is written, is referred to as ‘you’. It may take a little time to get into the book and understand what’s going on but I couldn’t put it down from the start. It’s a huge recommendation on my part!
