The Unmaking of June Farrow

What is time? What is reality? Adrienne Young played with these questions and created an amazingly thought-through story with an intricate plot. This book blends mystery and magic, love and loyality, and therefore builds a suspensful atmosphere accompanied by beautiful writing. A new all-time favourite with complex characters and a lot of secrets!

After reading a book like The Unmaking of June Farrow, you'll reconsider all your previous reviews and wonder if you should deduct a star from most of them just to give this one its full credit. Alternatively, consider this book a 6/5 star contender :) Where to begin... this is a time-travel story around our main character June who finds out that there is more behind the absence of her mother and the strange mental "sickness" that all Farrow women seem to fall prey to. June is a very thoughtful mid-thirty woman who has accepted her fate and goal to never marry and have children in order to break the curse of the Farrows. We are slowly introduced to her world and feelings - the small town atmosphere of North Carolina of 2023 and her growing confusion after recognising the very same signs of hallucinations that the women of her family have shown before her. From there on, we uncover every piece together with her and it's just as mind-boggling for us, the reader, as it is to her. The whole story is beautifully written: from the rural location and their quiet and secretive people over to the slow building of the story and second chance to love, everything matches. The only teeny tiny bit that I would change is spreading the ending onto more pages - just to enjoy the story for a bit longer.

Für alle war klar, die Farrow-Frauen werden früher oder später verrückt, verschwinden und kommen manchmal nicht wieder. Als ihre Großmutter stirbt bekommt June Farrow komische Briefe, die sie zwingen sich mit ihrer verschwundenen Mutter auseinanderzusetzen. Dabei entdeckt sie ein Bild ihr über 100 Jahre alt. Und da sie seit einem Jahr Dinge wahrnimmt, die sonst keiner sieht, besonders eine Tür, lässt sie sich untersuchen. Aber als sie den Mut findet und durch die Tür geht, wird ihr Leben zu einem extremen Abenteuer, verstrickt in der Zeit, mit einer starken Liebe, auch einer großen Gefahr… Wir folgen nur June, sie hatte sich abgefunden und nun entdeckt sie einen Funken. Es ist sehr schön mitzuerleben, wie sie diesem folgt. So grausam es auch sein mag. Die Frauen in ihrer Familie spielen eine große Rolle und auch einige Männer. Sie werden aber alle gut eingeführt und man kommt nicht durcheinander, obwohl es nicht immer ganz gradlinig ist. Mit schöner Sprache erleben wir das Drama und dürfen dabei zuschauen, wie June alles entdeckt und eine Entscheidung treffen muss. Sehr spannend, aber nichts für zwischen durch.

This is one of the most riveting and moving novels I've read in a long time! It's got everything - from complex characters to beautiful writing and an intricate plot. If, like me, you love it when stories play with concepts of time and reality, while simultaneously making you relate to the characters as well as asking the important questions in life, this one is for you. This book will certainly be an all time favourite of mine.
