Our Perfect Storm

Carley Fortune is back! She is one of those authors who is an absolute no-brainer for me. Whenever she releases a new book, I immediately put every other book aside to read it, and she never disappoints. This time, the story takes us to British Columbia. Frankie has been left at the altar and decides to go on her honeymoon with her longtime best friend, George. Through a journey of closure, self-discovery, and self-acceptance, the two begin to realize their feelings for each other, and Frankie has to ask herself what she truly wants. The setting was especially compelling because it felt very current. The inclusion of the 2023 wildfires and the way nature is changing and suffering because of human actions added depth and emotional weight to the story. Furthermore, the whale metaphor gave the novel so much character and even reminded me a little of Moby Dick. I love Carley Fortune's books because of their authentic Canadian settings and her characters, who are often at a crossroads in life and forced to start over. I absolutely loved Frankie and George. Their friendship and bond were incredibly heartwarming. Of course, there were moments when I wanted to throw the book against the wall because they frustrated me so much, but that only made them feel more human, realistic, and ultimately even more lovable and relatable.
