Lost in Translation - Found in History

In R. F. Kuang’s newest novel, „Taipei Story“, we follow Lily, a Chinese immigrant, on her journey to reconnect with her heritage. What initially seems like a rather ordinary attempt to improve her Chinese gradually unfolds into a story about geopolitical conflicts, a dark past whose wounds have not yet had time to heal, and the importance of remembrance. Lily has always been a good student, so it’s no surprise that she gets to go on a paid class trip to Taipei to improve her Chinese skills. At first, her experience seems like a dream come true, until a conflict between her closest friends changes everything. Betrayed by her best friends and fellow students, Lily turns to her family for comfort. This feels somewhat contradictory, considering her relationship with them during her early years, but it also marks a full-circle moment in her journey to understand her heritage. She begins asking her mother about her family’s past and the reasons that led them to immigrate to America. Lily’s story is about family, friendship, politics, but also acceptance and remorse. Through Lily’s journey, R. F. Kuang made me reflect on how history can be overlooked without ever truly being forgotten. The past continues to shape the present, even when the people who carry its memories struggle to talk about it. In the end, reconnecting with one’s heritage is not just about learning where you come from, but also about understanding the history that made you who you are.

    A story of identity

Taipei Story is a personal novel that explores identity, grief, family history and the feeling of trying to figure out where you belong. We follow Lily, a Chinese American college student, as she spends a semester abroad in Taipei, Taiwan. She’s participating in an intensive Mandarin language program to improve her skills and deepen her understanding of the language. Lily is also hoping to reconnect with her cultural heritage and identity. But she soon realizes that sharing a cultural background doesn’t automatically mean understanding the country, its people or its history. Her experiences bring her closer to her roots and she starts to raise questions about her own family history. At the same time she struggles with language barriers and misunderstandings which make her question her identity and her reasons for coming to Taiwan in the first place. When her grandfather passes away her journey and experiences of grief become more personal forcing her to reflect on a part of her family’s past that she never truly engaged with. One of my favorite aspects of this book was learning about the history of Taiwan and China. I found it fascinating how the author wove historical und political elements into Lily‘s everyday experiences and thoughts. This gave the story more depth and had me thinking about how family history and the historical context can shape people’s identities and their understanding of home and belonging. I also liked how real Lily felt as a protagonist. While reading I got the impression that I wasn’t simply following her story but that I actually spent those weeks in Taiwan with her. I felt her confusion, frustration, moments of happiness and insecurities and her grief. The writing made it easy to become immersed in her everyday life and the struggles with her family, classmates or the language. The story shows that discovering who you are is often messy and uncomfortable. Sometimes it’s about accepting what you don’t know and realizing that you can’t find all the answers.

    A Search for Connection

I was very lucky to receive an ARC for this title and cannot state how excited I've been to read Rebecca Kuang's latest novel. The coming-of-age-story follows Lily Cheng, a Yale student, going to Taipei to improve her Chinese, and finding out more about her heritage. The book is written exceptionally well, as always, and Kuang proves yet again, that whether she writes fantasy, fiction or anyhting else, the result will definitely be one of great quality. While I am personally more of a plot-focused reader (and enjoy novels with twists and turns a bit more), this character-driven story was very much enjoyable and entertaining. The usage of hanzi in the book is also really well executed and made me enroll in a course to learn Mandarin :) To me, the story lacked a bit of action though, as all of Lily's problems seem to boil down to miscommunication and being misunderstood, which almost exclusively resulted in people being unfriendly/hostile towards her. Nevertheless, it is evident how she grows through these situations and continues to develop as the story unfolds. While I would've wished for a bite more 'drama/high stakes' (as in Yellowface), I enjoyed Taipei Story and look forward to what R. F. Kuang will put her mind to next!
