Meine letzte Rezension Better the Devil von Erik J. Brown
In fear of getting sent back to his religious parents (and conversion therapy right after), a queer runaway takes on the identity of a missing child named Nathan when he's picked up by the police. Before he can weasel his way out he finds himself in this new family showing him love he's never experienced before and while he tries to keep the facade up before he can finally make is escape he starts investigating the real Nate's disappearance - with the helping hand of the cute boy next door. "Better the Devil" was another confirmation that I'm right about buying every novel Erik releases. He just has this natural charme in his writing that speaks to me. Even in this thriller, the humour he brought in never came across as out of place; the characters felt authentic and it actually took me a bit to figure out who the killer was. Anyone who read and liked "All That's Left in the World" should give "Better the Devil" a read, too!

    Die Tribute von Panem 1. Tödliche Spiele

    In einer Dystopie, in der 12 Bezirke ums Überleben ringen und sich, vom Kapitol gesteuert, in Gladiatorenkämpfen bis zum Tod bekriegen müssen, lehnt sich die junge Katniss Everdeen gegen diese brutale Unterjochung auf und bringt einen Stein ins Rollen, der weitaus größere Auswirkungen hat, als sie je erwartet hätte. Um ehrlich zu sein hatte ich ganz zu Beginn etwas Schwierigkeiten mich einzufinden, da die junge Katniss, aus deren Perspektive die Bücher geschrieben sind, als unglaubliche "Miesepetra" startet. Wenn man diese erste Hürde allerdings überwunden hat wird man in eine Welt gezogen, die zwar nicht direkt unsere ist, sich in den Grundlagen aber doch so ähnelt und fiebert für ihre gut geschriebenen, facettenreichen Charaktere bis zum Ende. Wer die Filme geschaut hat wird feststellen, dass die Story in den Büchern um einiges düsterer und brutaler ist und deutlich mehr in die Tiefe geht als ihr filmischer Counterpart. Ich persönlich finde beides gut, aber das Buch hat mich definitiv mehr berührt und gefesselt und mir an der ein oder anderen Stelle auch die Tränen in die Augen getrieben. Ich habe die Bücher hintereinander weg innerhalb weniger Tage verschlungen und kann sie nur jedem and Herz legen.

    All That's Left in the World

    We are in postapocalyptic America, after a pandemic has erased the vast majority of the human population. Following their "meet cute" - in which they both think the other one wants to kill them - we join Andrew and Jamie on a journey through TEOTWAWKI ('The End Of the World As We Know It') where they not only have to learn and adapt to the societal and environmental changes, but also grapple with their personal aspirations and what it means to be human after all. From the beginning, Brown pulled me in with his two immensely charming protagonists! Written in alternating first person perspective, what stands out is that their individual personalities are captured so well you can tell whose chapter it is without checking the headline. And I just LOVE the humour - got me cackling aloud on a regular basis. As soon as I'd finished the first book I immediately bought the sequel - And I will keep reading everything Brown releases!

    The Song of Achilles

    Everyone vaguely familiar with Greek mythology knows about the Achilles saga and the Trojan war. As a fan of queer love stories I was intrigued as soon as I learned the novel revolves around the relationship between Achilles and Patroclus. Written from Patroclus' point of view, the story begins with the young prince being exiled as a young boy and taken in by Achilles' father, King Peleus of Phthia. Madeline Miller portrayes the transition from an innocent and pure first friendship into admiration and finally the deepest and most compassionate kind of love so eloquently and beautifully I haven't witnessed an author achieve in a while. All the while she manages to incorporate the Olympians flawlessly without making it tacky or "too fantastical". You fall in love with the characters but even in the light, sweet moments you can't shake the underlying dread of knowing how the story ends. This was my first venture into the works of Miller and it will certainly not be the last.

    The Watchmaker of Filigree Street

    "The Watchmaker of Filigree Street" is a novel packed with immersive world building, loveable characters, clever humour and friendly banter that had me cackling out loud multiple times. Pulley's way with words immediately pulled me in - especially the description of the "supernatural aspects" (to avoid any spoilers) was so easily digestible - like: "Oh yes, of Course that's how that works!" But not only her style of writing captivated me - you can tell how much research went into this novel, it manages to really transport you into 19th century London. All in all a brilliant novel, especially considering it's her debut. I could hardly put it down and immediately went and bought the follow-up "The Lost Future of Pepperharrow". Highly recommend!

    The Perks of Being a Wallflower

    In "Perks of being a wallflower" we follow introverted and anxious teenage boy Charlie as he struggles to manoeurve school, family and friends, via the letters he writes to his "Dear Friend". Chbosky has such a way with words. He manages to convey the strongest emotions through the simplest of words. This makes the book a great read even for people trying to improve their English skills. I loved the movie and now I love the book even more!

    Ein Blick auf das Cover hatte direkt mein Interesse geweckt und nachdem ich dem Buchrücken entnommen habe, dass einer der Protagonisten gehörlos ist - ein Thema, welches mir vor allem in der Mangaszene so sehr selten untergekommen ist - wusste ich, dass ich es lesen muss. Das Thema wird wirklich schön umgesetzt und die Charaktere sind generell sehr authentisch geschrieben. Die Beziehung zwischen den Protagonisten entwickelt sich in einem angenehmen Tempo - nicht so überstürzt, wie es in dem Genre gerne passiert. Ich habe den ersten Band verschlungen und kann den zweiten kaum abwarten !

    Howl's Moving Castle

    Hayao Miyazaki's masterpiece has been one of my favourite movies since childhood and I'm so happy to finally have read its origins. As soon as you read the novel you will get the feeling of one story told through two different perspectives compared to the movie. Diana Wynne Jopnes created an incredibly immersive world with absolutely loveable characters. I laughed, I groaned, I sighed - all the motions you expect reading a good book. :)

    Der Fluch von Carrow House

    Seit zwei Jahren arbeitet Remy als Führerin durch das berüchtigte Carrow House, als einer ihrer Gäste sie dazu einlädt, in einer kleinen Gruppe 2 Wochen in Carrow House zu verbringen, um dem Übernatürlichen, welches hier sein Unwesen treiben soll, etwas tiefergehend auf den Zahn zu fühlen. Welche Ausmaße dieser Besuch annehmen würde, hätte wohl keiner der Beteiligten erwartet.... So eine durch und durch stimmige, fließende und spannende Geschichte habe ich schon lange nicht mehr gelesen. Jeder Charakter hat seine eigenen, authentischen Marotten, die einen um ihn sorgen lassen - schließlich ist das Überleben in keinem Genre so ungewiss wie in diesem. Die Story hat mich genau so gefesselt, wie das Gruselhaus seine Bewohner ;) Definitiv ein heißer Anwerter auf mein Lieblingsbuch des Jahres, welches ich bestimmt auch nicht das einzige Mal gelesen haben werde!

    It's Kind of a Funny Story

    **Trigger warning: mentions of suicidal thoughts** This coming-of-age story follows student Craig as he gets into an elite school and succumbs to the self inflicted stress of fighting to meet his own expectations, spiraling to the point of planning to end his own life. Luckily he manages to call a hotline and admits himself into a psychiatric institution where he meets a lot of interesting people and reinvents himself while going on the journey of recovery. Despite the dark motif, "It's kind of a funny story" was not hard to read. On the contrary - Vizzini effectively sprinkled dark humour all throughout the story without ever giving off the feeling of making light of the situation. As Vizzini himself spent time in a psychiatric institution he really authentically illustrates the inner workings of a mind struggling with depression and anxiety. I really enjoyed this read and can only recommend giving it a try yourself.
