The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires A Novel

Hendrix ist ein Meister des Absurden, des Humors in brenzligen Situationen und starker Figuren. Der Text hat mich durchweg unterhalten, gegruselt und zum Ende hin schier mitgerissen. Gerade der Buchclubaspekt kommt in dieser Lektüre nicht zu kurz. Für Fans von "Fright Night"!

Wow, Grady Hendrix really outdid himself with this one! I have never before read a book that features cozy book club reading against the backdrop of social injustice and traditional elements of true horror! Patricia and her neighbouring book club friends would do anything to protect their children and the upper part of town where they all live close together. As one day, James Harris joins the neighbourhood, inexplicable things start to happen and the book club is utterly convinced: they have to deal with an actual vampire. Yes, Grady Hendrix displays all the classical elements of identifying James as a vampire but he does so with adding his own original touch and trademark. This combined with his outstandingly vivid writing style made the story play out like a horror movie in my head, one disturbing picture chasing the next! All of the book's themes are perfectly laid bare and there is absolutely nothing I would change in the pacing of the plot, the story's character growth and the explosive ending. Freaking perfect!!

This is one of Grady Hendrix' best books yet and fun fact: he spent the two years, it took him to write this book, dressed as a penguin. A PENGUIN. He just got so much weirder, but definitely in a good way! The story takes place in the 90's and it's about a book club of housewives, getting sucked into the horror, that's happening in their small town. As they read a lot of true crime, they start to investigate on their own, to the dismay of their husbands. So naturally, they behave absolutely condescending and are of no help at all. There are a lot of gnarly scences throughout the book and I still kept on reading at night, whilst being alone in bed. Not the smartest idea, but all the more creepy!
