Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus is the original 1818 'Uncensored' Edition of Frankenstein as first published anonymously in 1818. This original version is much more true to the spirit of the author's original intentions than the heavily revised 1831 edition, edited by Shelley, in part, because of pressure to make the story more conservative. Many scholars prefer the 1818 text to the more common 1831 edition.
Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus is a novel written by Mary Shelley about a creature produced by an unorthodox scientific experiment. Shelley started writing the story when she was nineteen, and the novel was published when she was twenty-one. The first edition was published anonymously in London in 1818. Shelley's name appears on the second edition, published in France in 1823.
Shelley had travelled in the region of Geneva, where much of the story takes place, and the topics of galvanism and other similar occult ideas were themes of conversation among her companions, particularly her future husband, Percy Shelley. The storyline emerged from a dream. Mary, Percy, Lord Byron, and John Polidori decided to have a competition to see who could write the best horror story. After thinking for weeks about what her possible storyline could be, Shelley dreamt about a scientist who created life and was horrified by what he had made. She then wrote Frankenstein.

"The Modern Prometheus"
Einer meiner Lieblingsklassiker. Mary Shelley wirft Fragen über Moral, Leben, Tod und Veranlagung vs. Erziehung auf. Wer dieses Buch liest, wird noch lange darüber nachdenken. Die Geschichte von Victor Frankenstein und seiner Kreatur ist wahrscheinlich den Meisten schon durch die Verfilmungen bekannt, doch ich kann Jedem nur ans Herz legen, das Buch zu lesen. Wer ist am Ende wirklich das Monster? Frankenstein oder die Kreatur? Beide? Keiner von Beiden? Ein zeitloser Klassiker, der noch heute wichtige Themen behandelt. -

My favourite classic
I made it my mission to read or re-read more classics. Frankenstein is definitly still my favourite. The story basically is just Victor not wanting to take responsibility for the problems he caused. And the creature basically turning "dark" because a certain someone didn't want anything to do with "it". Beautiful prose, characters that are fundamentally flawed and a gloomy setting, Frankenstein has ist all. -

Schaurig schöner Klassiker
Weder staubtrocken, noch aus der Zeit gefallen oder schwierig zu lesen oder zu verstehen. Frankenstein von Mary Shelley ist wahrlich zeitlos. Sicher, sollte man die Charaktereigenschaften von Viktor Frankenstein nicht als bloße Marotten abtun oder den jugendlichen Leichtsinn eines Mannes aus guten Verhältnissen. Viel mehr ist der Text aus heutiger Sicht spannend, da er psychologisch in die Fehlbarkeit von Meister und Monster eintaucht und Schwächen beider Figuren aufdeckt. Ist Frankenenstein ein Incel? Ist das Monster ein Philosph? Was mich vor allem seit jeher an der Geschichte begeistert, ist die Erzählart. Auf mehreren Erzählebenen berichten die unterschiedlichsten Figuren von ihren Abenteuern mit Frankenstein und der Kreatur. Ein Abenteuerroman, ein schauriger Horrortext, ein Klassiker, den man unbedingt gelesen haben sollte. Und wer gar nicht genug von dem Thema kriegt, für den hab ich an dieser Stelle noch ein paar weitere Lektüretipps: "Botanical Daughter", "Frankissstein", "W1ll1am", The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankensetiin" und "What moves the Dead".
