A humorous and thoughtful novel about what it means to be human in the face of life and death

Bewertung am 15.06.2023

Bewertet: Buch (Gebundene Ausgabe)

Lawyer Wallace Price finds himself unexpectly dead which is inconvenient because he has appointments to make and people to fire. But dead is dead and so he gets collected by a Reaper and ends up at Charon´s Crossing, a tea store in the middle of nowhere and an in-between stop for recently minted ghosts. There he meets Hugo, a ferryman to the afterlife and a couple of ghosts who are waiting for their right time to cross over. When Wallace refuses to cross in a timely manner he is given another week of life to make up for all the things LIFE he missed out on while being at the office. While the story occasionally goes off on a tangent with several side stories that are not strictly necessary, with its intriguing premise, vivid characters, thoughtful reflections of life in the face of death and a heartwarming love story this book about death should be a definite yes on any summer reading list!

Heartwarming and heartbreaking in all the right ways

The perfect combination of a easy to grasp world and lovely, unique characters you quickly grow attached to. Explores the subject of death and life after death in a sometimes humorous, sometimes tragic way, while teaching you some small lessons to remember. I can only recommend reading it yourself :)

"It helps to laugh, even when you don’t feel like laughing."

Bewertet: Buch (Gebundene Ausgabe)

Eine wundervolle literarische Reise. Für mich genauso stark wie Mr. Parnassus. T.J.

Mr. Klune has done it again <3

Bewertet: Buch (Gebundene Ausgabe)

Mr. Klune strikes again: another wholesome comfort book. <3 Another story where you just wanna climb into and live with all these lovely characters. When Wallace Price died he was... well... he was an asshole. A selfish, ruthless human being, who knew nothing about empathy or sympathy. Who hid away behind a mask of coldness, who rather blamed anyone else for everything but himself. But when he died... he somehow started living. With the help of the other four main characters Mei, Hugo, Nelson and the dog Apollo (the best boy in town). His character development and his redemption arc are amazingly planned and written. Since it's dealing with death as its central topic, it's much darker than "The House In The Cerulean Sea". But that doesn't make it any less enjoyable. As a person who was confronted with the death of a loved one not so long ago, I found comofort in this book and in the imagination that there really might be something left after death. Once you're really into the story and the writing, you can't put it down anymore and you find yourself feeling a constant urge to finish the book, although you really don't want it to end. It's that kind of book where you just wanna grab a cup of tea and crawl under a nice cozy blanket while a storm is raging. It's that kind of a book, where you'll forget everything around you and even though it's much darker than cerulean sea, it lack's nothing of it's comfort. You found a home in the house in the cerulean sea, and now you found another home in the magical building of Charon's Crossing.
