An expansive, slow burn alternate history novel

Robin Swift, a boy born in China is brought back to England where he gets the opportunity to study English, Latin and Greek in preparation to receive a scholarship to the highly renowned translation center in Oxford: Babel. The translators of Babel are capable of working a kind of magic (silver-working) that draws power from the lost meaning when two words are translated. These magical silver bars are used all around the world, however, since they are dependent on the Babel translators for regular up-keep, Britain has gained an unparalleled power which they exert by subduing and colonizing the rest of the world. Robin has to decide between Babel, a promising future if he can turn a blind eye to their oppressive intentions, and Hermes, an underground society aiming to bring balance into the world by distributing silver bars to where they are needed most. How can Robin choose between the two, abandoning the other? And what would either choice mean for his newly found friend group? R.F. Kuang's Babel is a historical fantasy epic with a realistic magic system and great linguistic detail, which I very much enjoyed.

    Dark Academia meets Urban Fantasy

Because of my interest in languages, Babel landed on my To Read list rather quickly. All the positive reviews I had seen beforehand heightened my expectations for this novel - and I was not disappointed at all. It is not simply a fantasy novel about languages and translation, it's dark academia at its finest. It's not the easiest read, since it deals with heavy topics, such as colonialism, racism and sexism, but it's absolutely worth it. Babel might end up on the list of my all time favorite books!

    Zu langatmig

Mir hat es nicht gefallen, es war tlw so langweilig, dass ich aufhören wollte. Aber ich hatte es meiner Tochter versprochen, die begeistert war und deshalb habe ich es zu Ende gelesen. Sie hatte es aber in englisch gelesen. Der Anfang und das Ende waren etwas spannender aber trotzdem verstehe ich den Hype über dieses Buch nicht.

    modern day classic

There is so much I could say about this book, but I’ll try to keep it short. The writing style, the characters, and the world-building is something you come across rarely nowadays. Everything about this story, be it the plot or the setting, is truly captivating; Kuang covers topics like colonialism, racism and politics with such incredible writing that it truly left me in awe. Babel is a modern-day classic in my eyes.

    Fantastisch

Eine perfekte Mischung aus Fantasy, Geschichte und Linguistik im Dark Academia Setting. Das Buch bietet eine intensive Auseinandersetzung mit Kolonialismus, Rassismus und Heimatlosigkeit. Eine boslute Empfehlung.

    Buch (Gebundene Ausgabe)

A Masterpiece of Language and Rebellion

Babel is an absolute triumph of dark academia and speculative fiction. Set in an alternate 1830s Oxford, the story follows a young Chinese orphan brought to the prestigious Royal Institute of Translation, where the British Empire's global dominance is fueled by a magical system of silver-working that relies on lost meanings between translated languages. As he and his close-knit cohort of fellow outsiders navigate their elite education, they are inevitably forced to confront the brutal, imperialistic machinery they are helping to maintain. Kuang has crafted an incredibly dense, meticulously researched, and deeply atmospheric novel. The magic system based on etymology is really unique, making the act of translation itself feel both wondrous and devastatingly dangerous. It is a slow-burn, thought-provoking exploration of colonialism, racism, and the heavy price of complicity. The emotional bond between the core group of students is beautifully written. If you love dark academia with an on-point social commentary, and a story that will leave you absolutely breathless, this is a monumental must-read!

    Buch (Gebundene Ausgabe)

"An act of translation is always an act of violence"

    Buch (Taschenbuch)

“An act of translation is always an act of betrayal.”

Easily one of the most beautiful and devastating books I have read in a while. R.F. Kuang has created a work that feels so real, you sometimes forget there´s magic and fantasy involved. A critique of the academic world, while also touching on subjects of colonization, racism and sexism in the 19th century. This book manages to cover all these aspects and their overlap in a truly devastating but beautiful story, as we follow four university students through their years of studying translation and silverwork – the skills that magic is based on. But nothing is as wonderful and prestigious as it first seems once a look behind the curtains of privilege reveals what is being taken in order to hold this system up.

    Buch (Taschenbuch)

How can I recover from such a book?

It's hard to describe how much this story affected me. Colonialism, cultural identity, racism - only a few of the many topics that are discussed in depth throughout the book. The magic system fascinated me. Although it's unique, it's also subtle in a way. It's a fantastical element but somehow it felt absurdly realistic in the way it was integrated into daily life. And to learn so much about language, its development and its meaning in connection to the magic was extremely exciting. The characters themselves grew on me so much, which made reading through everything they experienced so much more painful in return. This book left a hole in my chest. It felt so powerful and beautifully sad, I couldn't stop thinking about it for a while after I finished reading it. Such an impactful and heartbreaking story.
