Rezension

'Rich and romantic - if stories had scent, this one would smell like a mug of black tea, the ink ribbons of a typewriter, and that addictive spice called enemies to lovers' Shelby Mahurin, New York Times bestselling author of Serpent & Dove

'A sweeping start to a beautiful and romantic new series. Ross weaves her stories in such a vulnerable and delicate way, truly with a style all her own. I adored this book' Adalyn Grace, New York Times bestselling author of Belladonna

'Ross enchants with a clever and sweeping love story set against an imaginative, dangerous world. Her writing sparkles, brimming with wit and magic from the first page to the last' Isabel Ibañez, New York Times bestselling author of What the River Knows

'A tale that hooks its readers with whip-smart intrigue, and holds them fast with dazzling prose, a charming cast, and a world where mystique shimmers just beneath the surface' Ayana Gray, New York Times bestselling author of Beasts of Prey

'Deeply romantic and beautifully written, Divine Rivals is a story that lingers long after the final page' Rachel Griffin, New York Times bestselling author of The Nature Of Witches

'The kind of a tale that gets under your skin and straight to your heart' Valia Lind, USA Today bestselling author of The Scarlet Rose

'Ruthless Vows is the epic conclusion of this story, that is just as tender and beautiful. Honestly, it crept up on us - there's a vulnerability and poignancy to the writing that made this exceptionally readable' Glamour

'The war may be chaos, but the symmetries of these books are exquisite' New York Times

'Rich world-building and the poignancy of young love make the first in this fantasy romance duology a wistful and riveting read' Washington Post

'Divine Rivals is another absolute winner from author Rebecca Ross, who is rapidly proving there's very little she can't do in the realm of fantasy fiction' Paste

"I think there is a magical link between you and me. A bond that not even distance can break"

A raging war, magical typewriters and a touching lovestory: Divine Rivals has it all. Rebecca Ross' writing is amazing, I loved reading every word, every sentence, she wrote. Divine Rivals is a masterpiece in my opinion, I've read it a few weeks ago and still think about it, about Roman and Iris, daily. I cannot recommend it enough.

my absolute highlight of the year!

I meaaaan… two journalists with linked magical typewriters anonymously write to eachother EXPECT HE KNOWS EXACTLY WHO SHE IS AND SHE HAS NO IDEA THAT SHE'S BEEN WRITING TO HER WORKPLACE RIVAL THE WHOLE TIME. The letters that Iris and Roman send each other are absolutely EVERYTHING to me und ich kann auch ehrlich nichts gegen den Drang tun, mir auf der Stelle eine alte Schreibmaschine zu kaufen - in theory, the stars could align and give me my own fateful love story. || • historical fiction set • gods at war • rivals to lovers • anonymous penpals • dual pov • he falls first • slow burn

    Enchanted Letters

„I think we all wear armor. I think those who don’t are fools, risking the pain of being wounded by the sharp edges of the world, over and over again. But if I’ve learned anything from those fools, it’s that to be vulnerable is a strength most of us fear.“ With a brother who’s lost at the frontlines and an addiction-battling mother at home, the only person who gives Iris solace is her mysterious pen pal. Even more so, when she decides to become a war corrispondent and her work rival, of all people, seems to have the same idea. Stuck with a young man she can’t stand and under frequent attack by the enemy, Iris has to brave the scary world she now lives in. „Divine Rivals“ is a book unlike any other I’ve read so far. It tells a story about grief, loss, family and love. It’s also about the effects war has on people – both those at the frontlines and those waiting at home to hear from their loved ones – and thus simply breaks your heart. The war in this book is due to a conflict between gods, but to me it feels very much like it’s set during WWI. Iris, at only 18 years old, has to hold her family together, as well as drop out of school in order to keep a roof over their heads. The way she steps up, first for her loved ones and later in her role as war corrispondent, is really inspiring. The protagonist‘s rivalry with Roman and the progression of their relationship kind of balances out the heartache and pain we are repeatedly hit with during this story. Their banter is amusing and their interactions are exceedingly heart-warming and overall leave you feeling warm and fuzzy. Roman comes from a totally dissimilar background to Iris and subsequently has different problems to contend with, which makes the story all the more believable and relatable. I love how big his heart is and that he not only falls first, but also harder. Since „Divine Rivals“ is a blend of many genres, it will appeal to a wide variety of readers. I recommend this book to everyone who likes historical romance, fantasy novels and books set during war. If you enjoy stories about finding light in dark times, this book is definitely for you.

    Buch (Gebundene Ausgabe)

A magical love story even in times of war

This book is a low fantasy romance story. It focusses on dealing with a war - seemingly far away - entering your daily life, the uncertainty of your loved ones surviving when called to the front line and how you react when it is one of yours. Falling in love through just your words on a magical piece of paper, without knowing who you’re writing to, is the most charming way I can imagine. It shows the beauty within and lets you be your true self away from the pressure of society. I also love that they make the best of the little time they have during the war. In a world where the gods are at war and send humans to fight on their battle fields, Iris is a journalist writing for a newspaper competing with Roman for a permanent position. Her brother has been called to the front and after a while she is all alone writing on her typewriter letters to him, which magically disappear when she puts them into her closet. After some time, her letters are answered by an anonymous man, who somehow becomes a friend in those ruff times. To find her brother, she lets herself get sent to the front, hoping she finds him alive. Somehow her rival followed her, writing also articles about the war. Why is he following her and who is this mysterious man she still writes to?

“I am coming to love him, in two different ways. Face to face, and word to word.”

This novel is a beautiful love story between two rivals, set in a war between gods. Iris and Roman are rivals, both writing for the same newspaper; but at the same time, they're unknowingly exchanging letters with each other. The story is heartwarming and romantic, yet also deeply emotional and dark. The fantasy elements are subtle, and the world-building is easy to follow, but the writing itself is simply stunning. The atmosphere is vivid and captivating, even in the dark war setting. By the end, the action and plot twists really take off, and now I can't wait to read the second part!

Myth, love, war, family and romance woven into one beautiful story! Magical realism at it's finest!

THAT ENDING?? Wow. Just… wow. This book was really good. From the very beginning, I found myself deeply invested in the story. Both Iris and Roman were such compelling characters to follow, and the concept is incredibly original! I definitely wasn’t prepared for all the emotions this book made me feel. It holds so much. And the romance? Absolutely beautifully executed. The pacing did feel a bit off at times—somewhat fast, but overall, it didn’t detract from the experience. I can only recommend this, you are in for an emotional ride!

My favorite romance of all time

Romantic, swoon worthy and magical: that’s the Letters of Enchantment duology. This book is a beautiful start to an exciting fantasy romance duology. In a world divided by war, we follow two rivaling journalists and their heartwarming love story. We see them writing romantic letters to each other (without knowing who the other person is) and follow them to the front of the war. This duology is also perfect for fantasy beginners, as the world building is very simple and easy to understand.

    Sooo beautiful

This story took my breath away! Enemies-to lovers, written in such a beautiful way, and no spice involved. The setting is so dark, it could be a story about the II. World War. But the magic makes it extra special. I absolutely loved this book and all the hype is well deserved!
