    Jahreshighlight!!!

    Buch (Taschenbuch)

There are no words to describe how amazing this book is, but I will try.

I expected this to be a touching lovestory about a forbidden love, but it was so much more. Both main characters Eva and Isabel are fascinating in their individual ways. Eva is very outgoing but secretive and Isabel used to be stern and lonely and thanks to Eva she turned into an empathetic and loving person. All of their interactions were captivating. But not only was their lovestory heartwarming and exciting, their family histories and everything revolving around World War II was gripping and devastating.

I keep the story safe in my head

You know that one iconic Lady Gaga meme where she goes "Talented, brilliant, incredible, amazing, showstopping, spectacular, never the same, totally unique"? That is me talking about van der Wouden's debut novel. I approached this book with high expectations, and it not only met them but truly surpassed them. From the very first page, it captivates you and dives deeper than you might anticipate, making for a truly unforgettable reading experience!!

From Guarded Hearts to Deep Affection

Yael van der Wouden's debut novel, The Safekeep, transports readers to the Netherlands in 1961, weaving a poignant tale of love, loss, and self-discovery. The story centers on Isabel, a solitary woman residing in her late mother's countryside home. Her structured life is disrupted when her brother Louis leaves his girlfriend, Eva, in Isabel's care during his absence. Initially, Isabel harbors resentment towards Eva, perceiving her as an intruder. However, as days pass, the women's interactions evolve from cold detachment to profound intimacy, uncovering buried desires and confronting past traumas. The novel delves into themes of forbidden love, the lingering shadows of World War II, and the complexities of personal and collective guilt. Van der Wouden masterfully crafts characters who, at first, are emotionally inaccessible. Isabel's initial aloofness and Eva's enigmatic presence create a palpable tension that gradually dissolves as their vulnerabilities are laid bare. This transformation allows readers to empathize deeply with their journeys, rendering their evolving relationship both believable and profoundly moving. The narrative's strength lies in its ability to portray heartbreak with unparalleled authenticity, capturing the rawness of emotions that accompany love and loss. The Safekeep stands out not only as a historical novel but also as a timeless exploration of human connections and the enduring impact of the past on the present.

    Hatred turns into desire

I was beyond floored while reading this novel. Beautifully and delicately crafted, The Safekeep unfolds with quiet intensity, drawing the reader into a story that is as emotionally rich as it is suspenseful. Watching Isabel and her house guest grow ever closer over the course of one transformative summer is both captivating and deeply moving. Their relationship develops with remarkable subtlety, revealing layers of longing, grief, and desire that linger long after the final page. This is a novel that rewards patience, offering a breathtaking exploration of love, memory, and the ways the past continues to shape our lives.

    Buch (Taschenbuch)

    Impressive and beautiful

A deeply emotional story set in 1960s Netherlands about queer love, family, and the meaning of home. The atmosphere is captivating, and the writing is absolutely beautiful. The pacing is rather slow, but it's completely worth it as it allows a deeper emotional connection to the story and its protagonists. The characters are very complex, and even though not the most likeable at first, I grew to really love them both. But this isn't just heartwarming romance, it's a touching story about the life after World War II, grief, and humanity. I must admit that the ending was very abrupt, but nontheless it was an unforgettable read!

    Buch (Taschenbuch)

Eine Wucht! Deutscher Titel: In ihrem Haus

    Already a Highlight of 2025

This was such an emotionally devastating book and I loved everything about it! It has the right amount of hot lesbian sex and historical elements and the ending was honestly just great! The novel touches on the legacy of WWII and our collective past; I would have loved seeing this win the Booker Prize 2024!!
