Absolute Empfehlung.

WOW
First of all: This book is my highlight of the year so far and if you haven’t read it then I strongly recommend that you go and pick it up at the next bookshop.
Wild dark shore is the story of a father and his three kids living on an isolated island as caretakers of the island. Nature had other plans for the island so the family will have to leave their precious home within a few months. A few months that changed their lives both in a good and in a devastating way.
Wild dark shore is a book about love, about passion and about our beautiful world which us humans slowly but surely destroy.

A Beautifully Devastating Story
This book absolutely shattered me. I went into it expecting a gripping, atmospheric thriller, but I never could have anticipated just how deeply it would affect me. A haunting, deeply emotional story of grief, love, survival and family secrets that made me cry several times and left me completely breathless.
From the very beginning, I was pulled into the eerie, isolated world of Shearwater Island. There is something incredibly unsettling about the setting, the vastness of the ocean surrounding this little patch of land, and the feeling that something is terribly wrong beneath the surface. The atmosphere is almost suffocating at times, and the tension builds so beautifully and slowly that I found myself constantly holding my breath, desperate to understand what was really going on.
What impressed me most, though, was how much emotional depth there is beneath the mystery. This is not simply a story about survival or uncovering dark secrets. It explores grief in all its different forms, the fragility of family bonds, the lengths we are willing to go to protect the people we love, and the devastating ways guilt and obsession can consume us. It also touches on motherhood, sacrifice and the instinct to survive, all while reminding us how fragile the natural world around us really is.
I became so attached to these characters, and the more I learned about them, the more emotionally invested I became. There were moments when I genuinely didn't know what to feel anymore. The story has this incredible ability to make you question everything you think you understand, while slowly revealing pieces of a much bigger and more heartbreaking picture. And when everything finally comes together, it hits HARD.
The mystery is so cleverly constructed, the pacing is wonderfully tense, and the twists are genuinely devastating. But what makes this book truly special to me is that the emotional impact never gets lost behind the suspense. If anything, the two complement each other perfectly. Some revelations hurt in ways I wasn't prepared for, and the ending absolutely broke me. I haven't ugly-cried over a book like this in a long time.
I also loved how the author manages to weave such big themes into an intimate, deeply personal story. It made me reflect on so many things, from our relationship with nature and the instinct to preserve life to the complicated ways we love, grieve and try to forgive ourselves. And somehow, even amid all the tragedy, there is a tiny glimmer of hope. A reminder that even when life brings us to our absolute lowest point, love can give us a reason to keep going.
I fell completely under this book's spell. It is haunting, unsettling, heartbreaking and unexpectedly beautiful. The kind of story that makes you want to immediately talk to someone about it, but also leaves you sitting quietly with your feelings because you don't quite know how to put them into words.
I finished it with a broken heart, tears in my eyes and the feeling that I had just read something truly special. Even days later, I can't stop thinking about its characters, its devastating twists and its heartbreaking beauty.
An absolute standout for me. If you love atmospheric thrillers with complex characters, beautifully layered mysteries and an emotional punch that will leave you in pieces, please read this book. Just be prepared to have your heart broken.

This island will haunt you
Part mystery, part family saga. The Salt family lives on Shearwater, an island off the coast of Antarctica. Because of the permafrost, there is a seed vault, and they are tasked with caring for it. The island is sinking, because of climate change. The ocean is rising and the permafrost is melting. As if all these problems weren't enough, one day a woman washes ashore, looking for her husband.
I've never read anything with such a unique setting. The language is really, really good and captures the mood and atmosphere in an excellent way. McConaghy has a way of holding you in a taut grip. This book is haunting and asks many questions about humanity and nature. It's a warning for the times we live in and the problems we have to face in the future. All the characters are in some way unlikable, but through McConaghy’s language, you can still empathize with them and the trauma that each and every one of them went through.
All in all, I believe that everyone who enjoyed Where the Crawdads Sing and God of the Woods would very much enjoy this novel. It has the literary mystery aspect of both of them and the nature-focused language of Delia Owens's novel. Nature acts as a mirror for the characters' journeys as well as their destiny, and is the deciding factor in their life decisions.
A beautiful and haunting story that will stay with you and remind you that, in the end, nature has the power and we are nothing but a source of friction.

A very unique story that will haunt you

atmospheric & captivating
Wild Dark Shore is an incredibly atmospheric book. McConaghy manages to describe the secluded island in such vivid detail that you can almost feel the wind and rain on your skin. A well executed genre mix, part mystery, part family drama with a commentary on climate change. The entire story is told through multiple perspectives, which all add something unique. Captivating and emotional!

Actually a wild shore
This Novel is an atmospheric and immersive read that blends vivid natural landscapes with a compelling family drama, set on a very unique Island. The story is told through the perspective of all the very different inhabitants of this weathered island and weaves in themes of climate change and ecological crisis, making it both engaging and thought-provoking. My favorite part is the insight it offers into the flora and fauna, not only of the island but also endangered species in general.
