Where the Crawdads Sing

Probably one of the best coming of age story’s I’ve read so far. This book has many facets. One moment it‘s a murder mystery, the next it‘s a coming of age story and in between you think you’re in a biology period. Delia Owens portrays in this book the deep connection between humans and their natural environment, in this case the protagonist is Kya, known in the town as the „Marsh girl“ and violently hated for being different. Kya grows up in almost complete isolation in the Carolina Marsh and is now the lead suspect in a murder. Although it sounds mysterious and thrilling „where the crawdads sing“ is at its heart a love letter to our natural world and the marsh feels like a vivid Charakter in its own right. This story explores loneliness, the first love, being loved for who you are, resilience and identity. I can’t put into words how much i loved Kya, how much empathy i had for her and how much i loved the Marsh. You can feel with how much love and dedication Delia Owens carefully constructed this world and these characters.

This is a very poetic story, heartbreaking but also somewhat hopeful. I liked how important nature was to the story, not only as a setting but also almost as a character. I loved the main character and her kindness and resilience. I enjoyed the mystery and the love story.
