Rezension

"It's a page-turner studded with speed bumps that force readers to pause and reckon with two opposing narratives: Vanessa falling in love and Vanessa being exploited by a pedophile. It's a powerful juxtaposition to be submerged into a romance and jolted back to the reality of abuse, knowing both versions of the story have truth." - Huffpost

"A gripping, chilling and thought-provoking tale . . . Kate Elizabeth Russell's work here is era-defining in a post-#MeToo movement world." - E!, Curl Up With the 20 Best and Buzziest Books of 2020

"Gripping and unsettling . . . a bracingly uncompromising book. It will doubtless be devoured with an ache of recognition by large numbers of women. But it really ought to be read by men." - The Economist

"As powerful as it is painful, and deserves its reputation as one of the defining books of the #MeToo era." - Vogue

"Uncanny and chilling . . . That there is no perfect victim, no perfect response to sexual abuse, is the crux of Russell's remarkable work of fiction." - Elle

"Explosive . . . a significant addition to the necessary reassessments and conversations sparked by the #MeToo movement." - NPR

"Exquisite . . . My Dark Vanessa stands on its own as simultaneously specific and universal-about a young woman who believes she's in a love story when she's actually in a psychological horror film." - Los Angeles Times

"A brilliant and stunning debut, My Dark Vanessa is utterly truth-rattling, humane in its clarity and chilling in its resonance. An absolute must read." - Gillian Flynn, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Gone Girl

"My Dark Vanessa is a total masterpiece of tone and point of view, even more impressive for how uninvested it seems in impressing us. It's fascinating and devastating and brilliant. I loved it." - Kristen Roupenian, bestselling author of You Know You Want This: "Cat Person" and Other Stories

"My Dark Vanessa is a harrowing triumph. Complex, smart, and utterly riveting from start to finish, Kate Elizabeth Russell's debut novel cracks open assumptions and clichés, and delivers a layered, nuanced narrative that is vital for a more thorough understanding of the extent and longevity of the damage wrought by sexual abuse. Be prepared for a pit in your stomach, a lump in your throat, and reading late into the night." - Lily King, bestselling author of Euphoria

"This timely, riveting debut illuminates the interplay between a child's heartbreaking confusion and the deepest perversions of power." - People, Book of the Week

"My Dark Vanessa is a singular achievement-a masterpiece of tension and tone that will simultaneously grip you, horrify you, and move you. . . . With utmost sensitivity and vivid, gut-churning detail, Russell illuminates Vanessa's struggle to see the story of her life for the tragedy it truly is. Before you start My Dark Vanessa, clear your schedule for the next few days-this . . . will utterly consume you." - Esquire, The Best Books Coming Out This Winter

"My Dark Vanessa destroyed me. This moving, ferocious story of an all-consuming relationship between a teenager and her teacher traces not just a stolen girlhood, but the aftershocks that haunt trauma survivors years into the future. Gripping, stunningly written, and important . . . I've been waiting for this book." - Julie Buntin, author of Marlena

"My Dark Vanessa is a hard story to read and a harder one to put down . . . a well-constructed package of dynamite." - Stephen King

one of the most gut-wrenching books i've ever read. a very important work, the hero's journey that Lolita's Dolores never got i wasn't ready for the emotional weight of it - it was like going through immersion therapy, but what can i say... the more a book destroys me, the more i love it absolutely worth reading, but beware

    Must Read

A Deep Dive into the Complexities of Abuse and Identity - A Novel That Stays With You

My Dark Vanessa is an incredibly powerful and emotionally stirring novel. The subject matter is tough — but unfortunately, also very real. What is presented here in fictional form reflects a societal issue that occurs far too often: vulnerable individuals, often very young women seeking attention and validation, fall into the hands of those who exploit these needs without scruple. The psychological dynamics that unfold are complex, confusing, and deeply unsettling — and that’s exactly what makes the book so intense. While reading, I found myself constantly torn, emotionally conflicted. It made me angry, affected, and deeply thoughtful. For the first time ever while reading a novel, I reached for a highlighter because so many passages stood out — either as key turning points in the plot or as significant insights into the protagonist’s emotional development. Toward the end, I was almost relieved to finish — not because the book was bad, but because it was so emotionally demanding and heavy on the heart. The final pages, however, touched me deeply and felt like a fitting conclusion. All in all, this is a strong, literary, and deeply affecting book that lingers long after the final page. It’s not an easy read — but one that is absolutely worth it.

    alles gut

    Buch (Taschenbuch)

"I just really need it to be a love story. You know? I really, really need it to be that."

This book is...hard. It was SO uncomfortable to read but still so hard to put down. It tells the story about a (VERY) young woman who falls in love with her teacher, they start a relationship and try not to get caught. Since Vanessa has almost no joy in her life, it feels cruel to wish her relationship would end but it torns her deeper and deeper into a hole of loneliness and dependency that she will probably never fully escape. Even though I did not enjoy reading it at all, it was a really good book in my opinion. It did everything to me that it probably was supposed to do. It was so gross, yet so engrossing. Also this could be your final reason you need to get a dog :)

My Dark Vanessa, crimson-barred, my blest

Vanessa Wye is only 15 years old when she gets into a relationship with her 44 year old teacher. But Vanessa doesn’t consider herself a victim. How could she if she was a willing participant? What if everything you know about love consists of twisted abuse, manipulation and dirty lies? How can Vanessa move on with her life? We’re moving back and forth between 2000 and 2017 to understand what kind of tremendous damage he created to Vanessa’s bleeding soul, crying heart and unbalanced mental moods. She told us her heartbreaking, dark journey from a dark, twisted, tarnished, exhausted mental state. The writing is what truly gives the book its meaning. It’s harsh, raw, realistic, provocative, brave, dark, bleak and terrifying! The words cut like glass pieces through your mind and you don’t drop tears for Vanessa, you just bleed out as she does.

    my dark vanessa

The book is pretty intensive. Absolutely a skin crawl story. Vanessa is fifteen years old when she starts an affair with her English teacher Jacob Strane. Years later Strane and Vanessa are still in contact. Even as other students come forwards with a (sexual) abuse claim against him. And Vanessa's great love story is not so great anymore. She tries to come to term with the relationship (abuse!). During my reading I wanted to shout at Vanessa to wake up, to open her eyes. But sometimes it's impossible, because Strane was manipulative and used to brainwashed her really badly.

    Buch (Taschenbuch)

Not easy to read but definitely worth it!

This novel takes place during 2 timelines. 2000 when our young protagonist Vanessa gets into a relationship with her teacher. 2017 when Vanessa is older and now has to unpack the traumatic events from when she was younger. My dark Vanessa does a phenomenal job at taking such a serious topic and turns it into something you will think about for a long time to come. It is not an easy read, because it deals with these heavy topics such as grooming but the author achieved to talk about this with the respect it deserves.
