We follow Lucy coming of age in a rather conservative small town in the eighties . She falls head over heels in love with her friend Susannah. We get to see the very real struggles, fears, and thoughts that she has to deal with due to the way she was raised and how the town's community is operating. The book feels very tangible and shows the real struggle of queer people during that time.

This story broke my heart in many ways and still I felt at peace afterwards. Lucy feels out of place, because she has always felt "different". Everyone expect her to be with her best friend Martin, but there is this spark with her friend Susannah.. In the 1990s in the Irish village of Crossmore people talk. Especially when something doesn't seem "normal". And if Lucy would fall in love with another girl, that would make people talk. "Do I want to be safe and secure, or do I want to be happy?" "Wouln't it be nice if I could be a person on my own?" "Chaos always begins with peace." Lucy is struggeling a lot with finding out who she is and who she wants to be. I think every Teenager knows that feeling too well! And even as an adult I still wonder sometimes. So I recommend this book to people who like to think, love and cry a little. This book again wrecked me, tore my heart out and stepped on it. It is the most heartfelt sapphic coming-of-age bokk of all time and I will never change my mind about that. We follow Lucy as she tries to navigate the feelings she has and cant quite place for her friend Susanah. The book progresses from 1991 all the way to 1995 as ahe grows up in a small town in Ireland. We follow her through highschool and after she follows Martin, her childhood freind turned "forced" lover to Dublin as she feels it is whats right. But her heart is never truly there with him. The feelings Chloe Michelle Howarth conveys in Lucy, her guilt and love for Susannah, with her writing are truly so real and genuine, I cried multiple times while reading because they felt so close to home. There was so much sapphic yearing right from the beginning and it couldn't have fit more. Those teenage years when it is the hardest to understand all the feelings youre feeling, especially when you are queer and cant place the things going on in your head. This is a truly amazing book for everyone PERIOD!!!

This is the most authentic sapphic experience you will ever read! I loved this book with every fiber of my body and soul. No book has ever captured what it feels like to love a woman as a woman, like this one! We experience the coming of age of Lucy in a small town in Scotland in the eighties starting with her at 15 years old. The feelings of a girl not knowing her place in a group of girls where everything starts to revolve around boys... But there is this one girl she always envied, adored,..loved.
