He’s definitely a 10/10, but of course, that’s not the only amazing thing about this book. ^^ It’s packed with demons, exorcists, secrets, and vatican intrigues, all centered around the headquarters of the exorcists. After Jules’s entire unit is wiped out and his best friend is killed right before his eyes, he deserts the army to uncover the truth about his past. Along the way, he crosses paths not only with the exorcist Selene Alleva, but also with one of the most powerful demons in the world. A race against time begins, forcing Selene and Jules to work together to stop a deadly conspiracy. But the deeper they dig, the more inconsistencies and betrayals emerge on both sides. Soon, they must ask themselves who they can still trust and whether they can even trust themselves. „Cruel is the Light“ by Sophie Clark is a fantastic start to a new fantasy series. One that’ll make you want to dive straight into the next book as soon as you finish the book!

In this book, we follow Selene and Jules—exorcist and soldier—through France and Italy, now all part of the empire. The plot is great and the tension was amazing, I loved the witty jokes, the teasing and the flirting, and the characters have depth to them. I read the book in one sitting, and although it was sunny, in some parts it felt like winter since I was so submerged into the story. A great time!

The Vatican hides a terrible secret that could change the world as it is known by Selene, who is a demon hunter. She crosses paths with a foot soldier - who stands on the other side of a years-long war. And of course, there's an undeniable attraction that only grows stronger each time they see each other. I was drawn into the story as soon as I got used to the world-building and really enjoyed this book. Now I'm (not so) patiently waiting for the second book to publish.

It's been barely 24 hours since I've closed the book and had to figure out how to find a way back to reality as this book does a lot correctly. "Cruel Is The Light" introduces the reader into the world in a well paced manner and it's also not scared to throw you into the battle of humans and demons. It's incredible and there have been several times I just had to resist squealing like my younger self than it came to Selene and Jules. The entire back and forth between them keeps you entertained, I promise.
