Project Hail Mary

Project Hail Mary might easily be my favourite sci-fi book to date. The way that Andy Weir combined the, quite difficult, real science with a big part of fictional one was very well executed. And the amount of thought and work that went into creating an extraterrestrial life-form? Just amazing. I absolutely love the depiction of our world working united to solve a problem - and the ethical dilemmas created along the way. Andy Weir basically gave one woman the power to save the world. The relationship between Rocky and Grace however, might be my favourite part of the whole book. It wasn't easy, but definitely realistic (in the way that I imagine a relationship between a human and a friendly extraterrestial to look exactly like that). I love the fact, that in the end they really were the best of friends. The open ending was definitely a nice factor. Project Hail Mary is a book I would always recommend to a science fiction fan!

There is so much science in this book that I don't understand but the friendship and hope of the story was so beautiful! I hyperfixated on this after watching the movie. Amaze amaze amaze!

Dr. Ryland Grace wakes up in space. Confused. Without Memories. His crewmates are dead. And while he's on the journey to save his sun from dying he meets Rocky. A spider like - alien made out of rock with the same issue, send to save their dying star. We jump between his time on the hail mary and how he even got there in the first time. Then what does a teacher do in space? I absolutely loved the dynamic between Grace and Rocky, how they build a way to communicate, how their friendship slowly builds and what their willing to sacrafice to save each other. After watching the movie about 3 times I just had to read the book and was not disappointed.

I don't know what I expected going into this book, having never really dabbled much in sci-fi before, but I certainly did not expect to utterly fall in love with it. The more the story progressed the less I could put it down, and particularly the unlikely friendship between Grace and Rocky made me both laugh and cry occasionally. There is just something magical about the feeling of genuine hope during an apocalypse that really makes this novel stand out, underlining its place among the classics of the genre.

I don't usually go for science fiction, but after hearing so much praise for Project Hail Mary, I decided to give it a go - and let me tell you, it was absolutely worth it. This book is exactly as good as you've heard it is. The sciencey stuff is explained just enough to kept it interesting, neither too much nor too little. The emotional stuff is so well done. The complicated relationships before the journey to space are just as interesting as the one formed in space. The dual timeline was very easy to follow and every flashback made sense where it was placed/remembered by Grace. Overall, I recommend this to absolutely everyone with my whole heart!
