Out of the Blue

I was pleasantly surprised by this read. Non-binary rep and a fake dating trope that I really enjoyed in a cute and fast paced story. The story telling seemed a bit too dramatic, which is why I took a star off, but all in all, a queer YA romance that I would recommend.

Tropes: fake dating, forced proximity Ich find es ist die perfekte Sommerlektüre die ich wirklich allen ans Herz legen kann. Es geht um Sean, einem Schwimmer der eines Tages am Strand jemanden liegen sieht. Crest (oder Ross) ist ein nicht-binärer Meermensch und muss einen Monat bei den Menschen leben und einem von ihnen helfen, bevor they zurück ins Meer nach Hause darf. Vor kurzem wurde mit Sean Schluss gemacht, und Ross' Ziel ist es, Sean zu helfen wieder mit seinem Ex zusammen zu kommen. Es ist wirklich super schön (teils recht kitschig) erzählt und hat richtig schöne Darstellung von gender und body-positivity. Es erinnert an Filmklassiker wie Splash oder Kinderserien wie H2O Plötzlich Meerjungfrau und nimmt sich dabei nicht allzu ernst. Was uns erwartet ist eine herz-erwärmende Liebesgeschichte zweier Menschen. Ich kann es sehr empfehlen!

This was such a nice read! Opposites attract, non-binary rep, merfolk, fake-dating and a life-changing experience. I LOVED that the merfolk is non-binary and that they don't see humans as men and women, but as feminine- and masculine-presenting people, so refreshing and heartwarming. I subtracted a star because why are newer YA books so obsessed with cheating?! Urgh. It's fine that it's sex-positive written (I mean, they are 16 and full of hormones) but ... You get the gist...

This reminded me a lot of "Aquamarine" with a sprinkle of H2O and The Little Mermaid - and it was fun! I must say I struggled with some of the characters, probably because I am not that big of a fan of the "I-have-to-get-my-ex-back"-trope. Still, it was a quick and cute little summer read.

A very sweet, queer YA love story between a heartbroken, gay lifeguard and a nonbinary merfolk. I found the dialouge to be a little cringey and the story a bit melodramatic at times. However, I would recommend this book to younger readers as a cute and easy summer read.
